This latest expression is a 27 year old whisky, inspired by the story of The Balvenie’s Malt Master, David C. Stewart MBE, and his long-time friend and colleague, John Barrett.
David has built his reputation and legacy on experimenting with new and different casks, something John shares a passion for.
This drive for experimentation combined with John’s access to interesting spirits from far and wide allowed The Balvenie team to create a truly remarkable whisky with an inspiring tale.
A Rare Discovery from Distant Shores tells the story of how John inspired The Balvenie’s Whisky Stocks team when he introduced samples of Caroni Rum to the sample room.
David C. Stewart explained the importance of the influence of Caroni rum, saying: “Caroni has become a kind of cult spirit, followed by rum fanatics all over the world. It’s rare, it’s fascinating, all because the distillery is no more. Caroni is totally unique; a heavy rum, bold, characterful and full of potential to create a really special Balvenie.”
The casks used for A Rare Discovery from Distant Shores aged the Caroni rum for 10 years in Trinidad before making the journey to The Balvenie’s Dufftown Distillery where they were stored until David transferred some 20 year old Balvenie into them.
The influence of the Caroni rum casks gives new notes to The Balvenie distillery’s signature honeyed flavour. The whisky is rich, dark and indulgent, with notes of muscovado sugar and manuka honey.
Charles Metcalfe, The Balvenie’s Global Brand Ambassador, expressed delight with the resulting whisky, summarising: “Caroni is a distillery that produced amazing rum and over the past 20 years it has come to be held in extremely high regard. The impact that the casks of this heavy style Trinidadian rum have had on this old Balvenie is truly remarkable.”
The elements of storytelling that you taste in every drop of The Balvenie’s A Rare Discovery from Distant Shores extend to the packaging of this limited-edition whisky, with a bespoke illustration by British artist and printmaker Andy Lovell depicting David Stewart in his sample room.
The texture and tactility of Andy’s work embody the spirit and importance of human creativity that is central to each exceptional Balvenie whisky. Craftsmanship of this standard, whether it be in whisky or art, is only achievable when makers pour their hearts into what they do.
