The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 (40% ABV) is one of the world's most loved single malt Scotch whiskies. The DoubleWood vision came to life in 1993 using a process designed by Malt Master David Stewart, now known commonly known as 'wood finishing'.
Balvenie DoubleWood single malt Scotch whisky spends at least 12 years mellowing in traditional whisky casks, American Oak ex-bourbon barrels and hogsheads to impart warming layers of vanilla spiciness. Next, it's moved to Spanish oak ex-Oloroso sherry casks for an additional nine months to increase the complexity of flavours before being transferred to marrying tuns for a final 3-4 months.
This is an excellent introduction to a matured whisky for your collection and would make the perfect whisky gift for a loved one, available in a 70cl bottle ready for gifting.
The multi-award-winning Balvenie Distillery in Banffshire is famous for being the only distillery in Scotland to retain the traditional core crafts of whisky production. Nowhere else will you find a distillery that still grows its own barley, still malts its own traditional floor maltings and still employs a team of skilled coopers to tend all the casks and a coppersmith to maintain the stills.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Sweet fruit and Oloroso sherry notes, layered with honey and vanilla
Taste: Smooth and mellow with beautifully combined flavours of nutty sweetness, cinnamon spiciness and delicate sherry layers.
Finish: Long and warming

Amazing
This whiskey is a nice everyday sip. Not overly complex but just enough complexity to still be enjoyable. The sherry cask notes are prominent on both nose and taste and leaves a wonderful warmth on the pallet. Although hard to find it does offer a hint of smoke in there to. A definite favourite of mine.
